Mini ISN satellite centre in Sibu or Miri next year to help ease Kuching burden.Borneo Post, 7th October 2009

KUCHING: Sarawak would likely be getting a mini satellite centre by next year, according to National Sports Institute (ISN) Sarawak Satellite Centre head Frederick Tan. He said the venue would either be in Sibu or Miri and it was a matter of time for ISN director-general Datuk Ramlan Abdul Aziz to give his nod to the centre's set-up. "I have already done a feasibility study and submitted a proposal to the director-general and he is very supportive of this," Tan told The Borneo Post here yesterday. According to Tan, Ramlan was very understanding and knew of the problems that Sarawak Satellite Centre was facing. "He has agreed to look into this matter seriously and hopefully we can have our mini satellite centre by next year," said Tan. Tan said the mini satellite centre would greatly help to alleviate the heavy workload shouldered by the present team of experts at Sarawak Satellite Centre
in Kuching. "Geographically, Sarawak is a very vast state and my existing staff cannot be running around the state to look to the needs of all the athletes at one time so if we have people in Sibu or Miri, we can be more complete in the delivery of our services," he said. Tan said he had already identified the people he wanted for the mini satellite centre. They will be 100 percent locals as they "know the people here and local conditions better". "We are looking at engaging two sports psychologists, one sports dietitian and one or two physiologists for the centre and those selected will have to go for a three-month training at the ISN headquarters in Bukit Jalil," he said. If Sibu is chosen as the venue for the mini satellite centre, it will cater for athletes in Sibu, Mukah, Kapit, Sarikei and Bintangor. Likewise, Miri can take care of athletes in the northern region that include Miri, Bintulu, Lawas and Limbang. Tan said it was high time that Sarawak had more mini satellite centres as the state was bidding to host Sukma XV in 2014. "I'm glad to say that we have the most number of experts at our centre...three sports psychologists Nurulisa Poli, Regina Gasin and Chong Siew Kian, one sports dietitian cum nutritionists Karene Lee, and two sports physiologists Joshua Philip and christina Janggui," he said. He said Sarawak was one of the centres selected as pioneer centres for the ISN pilot satellite centre project. Other centres are Pulau Pinang, Bandar Penawar Sports School, Johor, Terengganu, Sabah and Kelantan. Tan said the state satellite centre was also chosen as one of the best for mental toughness training. "That's why the national sports body had decided to bring in the national shuttlers including Beijing Olympic silver medallist Datuk Lee Chong Wei for mental toughness training in Kuching earlier this year," said Tan. Tan is also a personal coach (sports psychology) to Chong Wei. He has worked with the world number one and a half years and accompanied him to the Beijing Olympics last year. "I feel honoured as a Sarawakian to be chosen to work with Chong Wei and I also feel proud that he has won the country's first Olympics silver medal in badminton," he said. Tan finds Chong Wei very easy to work with and said: "He is very humble and understanding. He takes instructions very positively and we work very closely with each other." Tan said the satellite cantre was working very closely with Sarawak state Sports Council, State Education Department, professionals like Dr Ong Kong Swee and Dr Chin Hon Siong and officials from sports association. The Sarawak Satellite Centre was set up in 2006 and was officially launched on September 11, 2007. The services offered by the centre are sports psychology, exercise physiology, sports nutrition and physical conditioning. Sports psychology covers mental skills training, floatation tank session, motivation talk/camp and athletes/coaches education programme. The areas covered by exercise physiology include fitness testing(field test and laboratory test), ice bath(recovery), sports science colloquium and athletes/coaches education programme while sports nutrition will touch on urine specific gravity, sports drink demonstration, nutrition fuel to win, athletes weigh in-out assessment , on-site education on hydration and athletes/coaches education programme. As for physical conditioning, the specific areas are high performance gym workshop, dynamic warm-up practical session, athletes/coaches education programme and daily workout sessions. The type of sports involved are archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, cycling, diving, equestrian, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, karate, lawn bowls, sailing, sepak takraw, shooting, silat, snooker, and billiards, squash, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tenpin bowling, weightlifting and wushu. The target group of athletes are in the Elite/Sukma, backup or junior squads, development programme and school sports.

THE BORNEO POST - Thursday, October 1, 2009

KUCHING: A team of sports psychologists, physiologists and dietitians(nutritionists) under the National Sports Institute of Malaysia (ISN) Sarawak Satellite Center are constantly standing by to help the state Sukma athletes. The Center's head Frederick Tan said he much preferred having his officers at the training centers where they could communicate more effectively with the athletes and attend to their needs. "I have asked them not to stay in the office all the time because if they spend more at the training centers, they can be readily approached by the athletes for advice and assistance." Tan's support team consists of sports psychologists Nurulisa Poli, Regina Gasin and Chong Siew Kian; physiologists Joshua Philip and his assistant Christina Janggui, and dietitian cum nutritionists Karene Lee. "They will focus on mental training and dieting for athletes in the core sports and Category A sports as listed by Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS)," he said.
Under the MSNS Category A sports for Sukma XIII are weightlifting, volleyball, judo, lawn ball, archery, athletics, pencak silat, table tennis, swimming, diving, taekwondo, tennis, tenpin bowling, boxing and wushu. Category B sports are cycling, gymnastics, golf, women's hockey, canoeing, karate, fencing, shooting, optimist sailing, petanque, and squash while badminton, netball, football, men's hockey, sepaktakraw, rugby and kabaddi under Category C. The categorisation of the sports is based on the achievements in the previous Sukma. Tan believes motivation is very important to prepare for the Games in Melaka from May 29 to June 8 next year. "We organised a motivational camp at Camp Pueh in Sematan in June for team building and mental training," he said. A similar camp was organised in July in Miri for the coaches, he added, and the motivational speakers were Dunstan Tan, psychologists Dr Ong Kong Swee and Dr Chin Hon Siong, and Lee. Tan said team building was the main agenda for the camp and coaches were encouraged to work towards a common goal-to do well Sukma XIII. His officers are now helping out at the elite centers in Kuching before going to Sibu, Miri and Bintulu to hold motivational sessions there. The team of experts will accompany the state Sukma contingent to Sukma XIII.
